Vitiligo is a condition that causes depigmentation of parts of the skin. It occurs when skin pigment cells die or are unable to function. The cause of vitiligo, aside from cases of contact with certain chemicals, is unknown, but research suggests it may arise from autoimmune, genetic, oxidative stress, neural, or viral causes.


Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, but it may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. The condition is not life-threatening or contagious. It can be stressful or make you feel bad about yourself.

Vitiligo Symptoms:

The main sign of vitiligo is loss of skin color or loss of skin pigment that produces light or white patches on your skin. Usually, the discoloration first shows on sun-exposed areas, such as the hands, feet, arms, face and lips.

  • The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, although most experts believe that it is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body.
  • Most people who have vitiligo will develop the condition prior to age 40; about half develop it before age 20.
  • Vitiligo tends to run in families.
  • Vitiligo is sometimes associated with other medical conditions, including thyroid dysfunction.
  • Vitiligo is not painful and does not have significant health consequences; however, it can have emotional and psychological consequences.
  • Some medical treatments can reduce the severity of the condition, but it can be difficult to cure.

There is no recommended Vitiligo Diet,  but a healthy diet with balanced nutrition from a variety of sources is a good way to support the immune system.

Many people believe that keeping a healthy diet that is specific to vitiligo can control this skin disorder and promote cell regeneration as well as healthy skin.

Whole Grains:

Whole grains are a crucial part of any vitiligo diet as they contain a great deal of fibervitamins, and minerals, all of which work together to support a good overall health.



Vegetables are part of any healthy diet. In addition to vegetables, also have healing properties making them a great addition to a vitiligo diet.

Healthy Fats

Someone on a vitiligo diet should always do their best to include healthy fatsOlive oil is an excellent option as it is easy to add to your food. A wide range of nuts are also a great source of healthy fats in addition to protein, but someone on a vitiligo diet should avoid pistachios and cashews.

Natural Supplements

There are several natural supplements that have been linked to reducing the effects of vitiligo in terms of depigmentation.

Foods to Avoid in Vitiligo Diet

If you are on the vitiligo diet, you should always try to drink a lot of water as this will hydrate your skin, keeping it healthy. There are, however, certain foods to avoid including tea and red chili.
  • You should also avoid certain berries including cherries, raspberries and blackberries.
  • Milk products including curd, milk and buttermilk should also be avoided.
  • Beef, red meat, fish are also not recommended.
  • You should also keep away from spicy or oily foods, carbonated drinks, soda bicarbonate, coffee, chocolate, junk food.

Vitiligo Signs & Symptoms

The main sign of Vitiligo is pigment loss that produces milky-white patches i.e. depigmentation on the skin.


Other Vitiligo signs may include:

  • Premature whitening or graying of the hair on your scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard.
  • Loss of color in the tissues that line the inside of your mouth i.e. mucous membranes.
  • Loss or change in color of the inner layer of your eye i.e. retina.

Any part of body may be affected by vitiligodepigmentation usually first develops on sun-exposed areas of skin, such as hands, feet, arms, face and lips.

Vitiligo generally appears in one of three patterns:

  • Focal Pattern - Depigmentation limited to one or only a few areas.
  • Segmental Pattern - Depigmented patches that develop on one side of the body.
  • Generalized Pattern - The most common pattern. Depigmentation occurs symmetrically on both sides of the body.
